Cherry and Ana spilled out onto the street five minutes later in a cacophony of laughter. The remainder of the time they spent in the gallery they had been pawing at one another playfully. Anaâs lips were constantly in Cherryâs ear while she whispered ridiculous jokes, causing them both to giggle. To any outsider â it looked like they were madly in love.
Cherry finally stopped laughing and sucked in the eveningâs cool air. âI canât believe you did that! That was amazing!â
Ana stopped laughing as well, and pulled Cherry in closely and whispered into her ear, âTheyâre still watching us. Shall we go for a walk?â
Cherry pulled back and looked deeply into Anaâs eyes, reminding herself that it was just for show. âYes, absolutely,â she said, grabbing Anaâs hand and kissing her knuckles.
Ana wrapped an arm around Cherry and they strolled away from the gallery. Once out of sight, Cherry released Ana. She shook her hand as if something had singed it. Anaâs touch had burned and tingled.
Cherry stopped walking, causing Ana to halt and said, âDo you want to go somewhere for dinner? I mean, the night is young â especially since we spent almost no time in there.â
âYes, definitely. Letâs get somewhere warm. Itâs a lovely fall night, but it is brisk!â she cried, rubbing her arms and shivering slightly.
âI know just the place,â Cherry said, looping her arm into Anaâs.
Merely for body heatâ¦
Riiiiiiiightâ¦
They walked quickly down the street, and soon Cherry pulled Ana into a poorly lit restaurant with almost no signage.
âWhere are we?â Ana asked, sniffing the air.
âWeâre in a Pho House â technically, itâs called The Pho Spot.â
âUh huh,â Ana murmured.
âJust trust me. Pretend you are on a food adventure,â Cherry suggested.
âGladly,â Ana said, shivering slightly.
âBesides, Pho is soup â hot, spicy, umami soup. Itâll take the chill away.â
The hostess sat them in a dimly lit nook, and Cherry ordered hot tea and water for both of them. After she wandered away from their table, Cherry sat across from Ana, feeling nervous.
âSooooo â are we going to talk about what just happened? You know, besides my excellent acting skills,â Ana asked.
Cherry felt a blush bloom across her face, and their waitress arrived with tea and water. âDo you need menus?â
âUmm, Iâm not sure. Ana, are you going to trust my ordering skills?â Cherry asked.
âYes, absolutely â you be my food guide,â Ana answered brightly.
âLetâs go with two number threes and two number seventeens.â The waitress nodded and they were left alone.
Cherry shifted uncomfortably in her seat. âFirst, I want to apologize. I shouldâve warned you that we were walking into a hornet nest of lesbian drama. So, Iâm deeply sorry. DEEPLY. SORRY.â
âThanks, but I wasnât looking for an apology. Iâd love to hear some back story. Obviously, Cruella DeVille is an ex-girlfriend. I got that. Iâm looking for some context.â
Cherry shifted again and then let go of a long sigh. âCruella â that was Christine Carole â loving that nick name by the way. We dated for six months.
